Senior Seminar: RAIK 40
During the fall 2018 semester, the Raikes School offered a new class for seniors focused on preparing soon-to-be alumni for life outside of Kauffman and college. The course was incredibly well received by the seniors and we look forward to offering our second version in fall 2019.
A consistent theme in student feedback was that students particularly enjoyed sessions led by alumni and felt they could connect with alumni experiences the most. Thank you to Brendan Gallo, Ashley Schantell, Julia Menez, Michael Hollman, and Derek Nordgren for sharing their time and expertise in fall 2018. We hope to involve even more alumni this fall through in-person presentations and panel discussions or through remote conversations in class or with students individually outside of class. As alumni, you likely have some “I wish I would have known…” stories and have learned some valuable lessons through your life experience that we know our current seniors would appreciate hearing.
Topics of particular interest to cohort 2016 are:
- Budgeting and basic personal finance
- Retirement accounts and investments
- Other financial management: managing your credit score, filing taxes
- Renting an apartment and buying a house
- Insurance (life, car, renters, home owners, etc.): what you need, what you don’t and how to find the best options
- Negotiating salary and benefits (initial offers and raises and promotions)
- Career planning beyond the first job, graceful exit strategies and making career changes
- Managing up: managing your boss and being a rockstar employee
- Personal and professional development strategies: work-life balance, community engagement, continued learning
- Personal health and wellbeing: navigating major life transitions, meal prep and healthy eating options, physical fitness, focusing on self-care and mental health
- Travel tips: post-college travel, taking and planning vacations while working
- Dining, happy hour, and office etiquette
If you would like to participate in discussions on topics listed above, have contacts you know who could add value to this class, or have ideas for other topics we should include, contact Anna Pressler at anna.pressler@unl.edu or 402-472-9097. We are currently building the syllabus and hope to have course content finalized by mid-August.
