The 2016 - 2017 Year is the largest in Design Studio history, as we partnered with 19 sponsors to produce 24 projects. Our students have worked hard to deliver innovative solutions to business and research problems, utilizing a wide array of technologies to make it all happen. Here are a couple of projects making a big impact:
- Buildertrend provides tools for residential construction companies and needs a scalable solution for customers to store and access their files efficiently.
The Design Studio team has developed several tools to manage the company's current file system and assist in the transition to cloud-based storage plans. Initially, the team developed a Windows service to arrange files on Buildertrend's servers. Next, the team designed a mock version of Buildertrend's file system on the Google Cloud Platform, and made the necessary changes to the previously developed service to transfer files from local servers to the cloud. In the final releases of the project, the team is developing a tool to find inconsistencies between the sponsor's database and the users' corresponding local file system. - A Way Home America is a national initiative to build the movement to prevent and end homelessness among young people.
The Design Studio team is developing an online platform to support communication and coordination of efforts to end youth homelessness across the country. Not only does the team's solution provide a centralized placed to store a wide variety of data, it also provides a way to analyze and share the data to enable actionable insights. The highlight of the project is the interactive visualizations, designed to engage both an informed audience and the general public. - WEX Health simplifies the business of healthcare through WEX Health Cloud, a cloud-based healthcare financial management platform.
The Design Studio team worked to provide customers with a more accessible way to access their health insurance billing by creating applications for Android and iOS that provide the same functionality customers have come to expect from WEX Health's web portal. From their phones, customers can view their current and upcoming premiums, and make payments by card, check, or bank account.
We would love to see you at the Design Studio Showcase where you can see all of the students' hard work and connect with our Design Studio partners, current students, and alumni. In addition to the showcase, join us at Innovation Campus at 1:30 for a lecture from Mehran Sahami, a Computer Science professor from Stanford University. Professor Sahami's research interests include computer science education and artificial intelligence, and he will talk about Expanding the Frontiers of Computer Science.
